Grizzly Conditions!

Went out for a walk today with my buddy Michael Franco.

We toured up grizzly and the wind was blowing hard! Shark fins everywhere. We snapped a few photos up top.

 Looking down canyon at Superior.

Mike taking a picture from up top.

All grins on the ridge. Michael bought Dalt's split board and this was his maiden journey. Going down was tougher than going up it seems like in these conditions. The snow was severely wind blown and we were constantly dodging rocks just below the surface. We ran into a dozen other people and they were skiing down the skin track so we did the same for the most part. Just not enough snow yet!  Ran into a few interesting situations and we will both be sore for a few days (boot packed a creek bottom for a minute)...

Cant wait for more snow!

Thanks,
Chris

Great day with Miles and Grider

I forgot my camera this trip so we only have one photo. We caught lots of fish but this one warranted the  "dig out the phone for a picture...". Caught her in fast water.

Miles Day sent me a message Saturday asking if I was up for a fish on Sunday. I replied yes! Later that night Grider sent a text saying he was craving a fish as well so we had a plan.

Miles took us to his secret spot and we put in some serious walking. We were catching fish from the first cast and it didn't stop all day. As we worked up stream we started to run into more and more guys. I felt like I was in a Viagra commercial with all the guys fly fishing shoulder to shoulder on a perfect day and labs running around... Haha

Grider was on and he was reeling browns in all day and Miles was throwing a dry fly and he was also doing really well. I wish I had more photos...

Chris Giles

Full Moon Fever

Despite my better judgement we decided to make the trek to remoteville for Levi's first fly fish. A full moon had been in the sky for a few nights and the trout were no where to be found.
We had a dang good lunch though...
Bagel sandwiches with tons of fixings.

Bills caught 10 or so fish but they were all whitties. I caught a 19" Brown on a streamer to augment the whitty fest... The water was low and clear and what I thought were world class runs yielded not a bite...
I must say though for a first time fly fishermen Bills picked it up quick and spent quite a bit of time in the "kill zone". Day dreaming for better days on the home stretch. Dalt couldn't have picked a better weekend to go smash heads playing rugby...
Lennon and I at lunch hole.

Dollar Bills on the Berry

The stars finally alined and Bills and I got out for a fish. The Cutty's were biting big time and we both caught 10 or so fish each.

It was so cold though! Bills brought a Goal Zero battery and an electric blanket. I was laughing at first but it didn't take long until we were fighting over "blanket time"...

Lots of funny stories with dropping fish, tangled line, blood all over the boat, to cold to eat sandwiches, Levi hooking his jeans to his seat with a lure, realizing we were fishing in three feet of water, we laughed really hard the whole time...

Bills with the fish of the day and the first fish of the day! He was squirrely though as you can see and wouldn't smile at picture time.

This thing was really big. Just under 22" and I suspect at least 4 lbs.

Great trip and I can't wait to do it again.

Bills just got his first fly rod and I am keen to get him on a river to catch a few big Cutty's. Lake or river though its all fun!
Thanks,

Chris Giles

B-day Fish/Shorty Leaves Us

Shorty (far right) passed away on my birthday this year in a tragic car accident. He will be sorely missed to say the least.

While walking this stretch we talked about Shorty (2 days prior to his passing) and the trip we had all made to this exact spot 2 years ago to the date. Some funny stories involving Shorty and his motor cycle rig had us chuckling. On that trip I drew Shorty a map from Preston Idaho to our secret spot. We left little arrows and things along the dirt road. At about 10:00 that night we had wrote him off but a little light way of in the distance kept getting closer and closer to our camp. Shorty had made it! The next day as he packed back up his motor cycle with his dog in its dog cage strapped on the back with bungy cords, he left his helmet on the back and as he floored it up the steep hill it bounced right off into the dirt. The cowboy that was hanging out in our camp that morning saw this and jumped on his horse and chased Shorty down to return the helmet. The cowboy came back in a sweat 30 minutes later and said he had to chase him for 2-3 miles before he got him to pull over. Classic! And this trip goes down as a classic as well...

The first day we had scattered snow showers and we were cold! The fish were active though and the streamers were on!

 Dalt with a nice Cutty.
I have had a double cutty and a double whitty but on this trip I got my first ever double brown. I need a double rainbow now!

 Big Cutty's

Got this guy on the first cast in lunch hole.

 Big articulated streamer.

Biggest Cutty of the trip!

We always joke that Dalt gets the big ones on my birthday but this year I had the magic sauce for once. I was catching some big ones!

One more big brown.

Dalt with a big Cutty on a streamer.

Walked the biggest/longest stretch to date. We figured it was 5 miles up and 5 miles down. We covered all our favorite pools and runs and found a few new ones.

Leaves were turning and we both caught over 30 fish each. Quality was at every turn. No "all timers" but several that were close.

Right near the two creeks coming together.

Fresh Mountain Lion tracks in the mud.

Dalt taking in a nice fire.

That night I heated rocks in the fire and buried them 4" under my tent. I did not get cold once but I didn't sleep worth a damn thinking about monster trout. Good heat trick that was taught to me by Beesley.

Second day we ventured further down and came across this guy below...

 Streamer!

Round up! taking the cows out of the hills back to the ranches.

Thanks,

Chris Giles

Ranch Land

Dalt got us on a new stretch out west through some old contacts. Sometimes all you have to do is pick up the phone... It sat right on the confluence of two really great rivers. Ranch land at it's finest.

 Quick day trip.

It was a bit sunny and lots of walking.

Dalt caught a few in here. Caught fish using all methods... Dries, wets and streamers.

 Nice Cutty.

We will be back here for sure. Just scratched the surface.
Thanks,
Giles
